KMFDM

KMFDM

KMFDM were formed in Germany during 1984, they pioneered the crossover between techno/dance and heavy metal with their signature industrial sound. KMFDM moved to Chicago in the mid-80s. Rapidly evolving year by year through intense experimentation and touring; the band has redefined themselves with each new release. They have released a score of albums which can be seen here. Sascha Konietzko, also known as Kapt'n K, is a founding member of KMFDM and is the Vocalist, while also doing Bass, Synths, Programming and Percussion for the band. Also known as the Father of Industrial Rock..
The band has just completed work on a new EP titled Ruck Zuck, set for release on May 9, 2006.

Thank you first of all for taking the time from your busy schedule to answer these questions. Now Happy 22nd Birthday to KMFDM. Did you ever in your wildest dreams see the band(with lineup chages) lasting this long, back in the 80's when you formed it?
I never thought of KMFDM as a band until very recently. and no, since it was all more a joke than a serious enterprise I never thought it'd go on for more than a few weeks or months at best.

You must have had some incredible highs and lows over this time. Does Kapt'n K live with any regrets? Anything you would have done differently? Any past members you'd wish had stuck around?
As I recently said on the occasion of KMFDM'S 22ND ANNIVERSARY: "I am happy with the way things have gone for all this time, I would do it all over again, no regrets."

so, there.... :-)

Do you have any visions of ending this saga in the near future or will you be performing to the grave?
I don't think very far ahead. time will tell. the good intention's there...

It's now been 6 months since the release of Hau Ruck. This album was responsible for converting many new fans to KMFDM, do you look at it now and say "I couldn't have done that better!" or do you think "Maybe if I'd tried this"?
I am never content with anything i do, that's what keeps me going. of course, at the time that i wrap up an album it's the day before the mastering date. otherwise, i'd go on and on and on...

Many fans say it was good to hear more German lyrics again (Auf Wiederseh'n and Hau Ruck). What were the reasons for this and do you plan on doing the same with the next album?
I like to speak my native tongue in my music more and more, so yes, perhaps there'll be more of that in the future.

Any news about work on the next album you wish to tell us?
Hahaha, HAU RUCK was released not 6 months ago and I just spent nearly 2 months on RUCK ZUCK. it's going to be a while before I go for another KMFDM round. right now I am mixing a new album by Lucia, Dean Garcia (Curve) and myself. that'll keep me busy through the spring. then touring season begins, off to europe. sometime inbetween all of this we're going to play U.S. shows as well.

Are there any guests you wish to work with on future albums? Will the next album have any guests or will it be just the Hau Ruck lineup again?
You say "just" as if it were inferior. the search for good musicians/partners/friends has ended. we're a unit until further notice.

Any news on the planned re-releases?
KMFDM's back-catalogue is still being held hostage. it's a long story but it's end is nigh. expect the re-release as soon as humanly possibly. we've not had any income from catalogue sales for two and a half years already, it's a litigious world out there...

You have done many collaborations over your career, who was your most enjoyable to work with?
The most enjoyable collaborations are with people that give themselves into it. artists that truly "collaborate" rather than leech off. consequently there are a bunch of KMFDM-has-beens that, once temporarily involved, never cease to fly the "i've recorded with KMFDM" banner. professionalism is a virtue in my book.

Do you still get the same buzz out of live performances after all these years?
Yeah, the butterflies have left many years ago, but i am always psyched to play live.

What was your most enjoyable tour and why?
The fall/winter 2005 tour, the most recent one, because it took us to so many places we've never seen before.

Is there any country which you have yet to tour but would love to play in?
South america, Spain, Portugal, Africa and most of all, China.

You must notice a difference between crowds from different countries. Which is your favourite to perform to? Which crowd really get into the KMFDM experience?
Russia is wildest, japan is cool with all the synchronized crowd-moves.

The next KMFDM EP is to be Ruck Zuck. Give us a rundown of what we can expect.
A 9-track ep, with remixes of
HAU RUCK
FREE YOUR HATE
REAL THING
READY TO BLOW
MINI MINI MINI
PROFESSIONAL KILLER
WWIII

And a cover of DAF's Der Mussolini as well as a spoken word piece in german ANSAGE Over 40 minutes of fun. the remixes are extremely re-worked, a lot of time was spent on detail. a worthy follow-up/companion release to our latest album HAU RUCK

If you had to choose one song of yours to represent the band, which one would it be?
D.I.Y

How easily did Lucia slot into KMFDM? Is she loving every minute of it?
She didn't slot per se. we started working together during the MDFMK recordings and since then it all progressed quite organically and smooth. as far as what she loves and doesn't love, you'd best ask her yourself.

How often does she get told she could be a Shirley Manson fill in?
???huh ?

What is your general opinion of the past year in music? Any new artists that impress you? Do you think there is any more or less quality music being produced now than there was in past decades?
I didn't exactly follow the past year or any other year. I am in my own world on my own schedule. I have not been impressed for a while now... since I don't watch tv, large amounts of crap never enter my environs.

Do try keep up to date with the German music scene? What's your opinion of it?
No. Scenes don't interest me. I rather read or cook if I am not in the studio

Do you think it would have been easier today for KMFDM to succeed in Germany or is America still the place to be?
It was fun leaving old for new, now new has gotten a bit old and i have been learning to like the best of both worlds.

What's the last album you purchased? Listened to?
KLAUS KINSKI "Ich bin so wild nach Deinem Erdbeermund"

Where do you draw inspiration from when writing songs?
From my brain.

When you release a new cd, are you one to panic as to how it will be recieved or do you sit back and relax?
I never think of how it will be received. it would spoil my fun.

What do you do to relax?
I release records

Considering all this bull shit going on with the MPA and sites that have guitar tabs being shut down. Thus not being able to view any KMFDM tabs that maybe out there. Have you ever thought of putting tab books out for each album so that the guitar/bass playing fans can play your songs?
What's mpa ? tabs is something fans should be making. they have the time.

You have launched your own record label "KMFDM Records", how much of your time does this take, what made you set it up?
It takes very little time, much less than dealing with other labels. that's why we did it. I like to have things done in-house, we don't really need any outside help to do our stuff.

Right, that just about draws this interview to a close. Any final words of wisdom from Kapt'n K?
Good things come to those who wait

Best and thanks very much for the opportunity
sascha
